Petrichor in Abundance

I’m shocked (not shocked) that I haven’t posted on here for a year. It’s for reasons obvs. IRL got busy.

Anyway, back on the pony to let you know about a new release.

Around this time last year, after another long delay I decided to make a new noise and asked the lovely Cousin Silas if he was up for it. He always is.

Unfortunately, half a track in my old Mac bit the big one. It took a couple of months to get back on track and all the tools reloaded. From there it was the usual long process of making, swapping, thinking, revising, rethinking, procrastinating, making, rinse, repeat.

Along the road, around August, I decided to use this opportunity and make a physical copy that had been on the back burner for a while. I found a small Company in Cardiff (where my No1 boy is studying) that could do short run lathe cut vinyl and also cassettes. The production time is extended but that allowed for more music making and time to get to make some original packaging. I’m super happy with the outcome of all these aspects.

So, this is it. Our ‘anniversary’ celebration ‘Petrichor in Abundance’.

These are the rambling notes from the BC page..

“This is either the seventh or eighth CS & GoB collaboration over the last 10 years. The last one being 2022 seems an age away.

If this thing has a theme it would be ‘excavation’. Tracks one to six form the core of the sequence. Three of these are entirely new, three others are revisited/excavated pieces.

The vinyl edition features only the first six tracks which were remixed to fit the record format and time limit. The cassette features the six lead tracks plus Re/Embers with all the tracks at their full length.

‘Unearthed’ is the oldest artefact (originally called ‘Uther’s Dub’) and was made a little before ‘Crow Dub’ and was included on a DigitalDIZZY release, the first GoB ‘thing’ Glove of Dub. That CS was able to find space in this is admirable.

Track 3 – Stuck/Unstuck is rework of a piece on a previous SubCastCo release ‘The Warlock Tapes’ under the title ‘Baal Wants’ (original video on the track profile). For reasons likely related to poor archiving & Dr Shiraz I could not find the root files, fortunately…. notes. The new version is reconstructed from fresh stems and a number of samples used on the original.

This new version again features musician & soundtrack composer Mark Fox on keyboards. Mark’s contribution really hits the intended atmosphere of gothic horror.

The three pieces Community Vibrancy Index, Kodukushi & Dog Head Reverie are all of recent construction. All use numerous loops, samples, field recordings and other audio ephemera that haunt my hard drives.

The title track only appears on the digital release and is a long form sound collage. Both CS & t/GoB have noted how they really enjoyed working on this.

Ultrameridian & Re/Embers are revisited versions of relatively recent tracks that appeared on themed v/a collaborations through the Silas Emporium. The first is a manic ‘rave’ style track that barely holds it together. Re/Embers is haunted by Miles Davis.
Untitled (Ogun Dub) is a sketch or footnote.

The point of this ramble is that to some greater or lesser degree of relevance, this is a ten-year anniversary for our collaborations.
My huge thanks to CS. The outcomes are always surprising and fresh.

Music is the Best”

The video for ‘Unearthed’ was filmed around the Uffington White Horse during the summer.

Along with creating this I have been making a lot of paintings. The process of music and painting is very interlinked with ideas feeding on each other. I’m not big on documentation but I will post some of the visual items on the site over the next few weeks hopefully. I have the kernel of an idea for the next thing.

As noted in a recent conversation in the middle of Aldi with a friend , “its not about the attention, it’s about the art”.

Love

GoB
