This week the popular term ‘Post-Truth’ has been introduced into the OED. This has been very much illicit by the EU ‘BREXIT’ referendum in the UK and the gallingly dystopian USA Presidential Election where a visibly sociopathic, misogynistic, racist bully achieved the Highest Office in the land of the no longer free.

‘Post-Truth’ is defined as an adjective “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”, editors said that use of the term “post-truth” had increased by around 2,000% in 2016 compared to last year. The spike in usage, it said, is “in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States”.

It’s worth noting that the other terms / words that where runners up in this years laughfest of populist terms are ‘Alt-Right’, ‘BREXITEER’ (always use capitalisation as its symbolic of righteous anger/idiocy), Chatbot (illustrating the personal disaffection of humans for other other humans) & Coulrophobia, being Fear of Clowns. The interlinking of societal collapse and language is at least academically well documented.
